Preparing YOUR Outdoor Paradise

It has been a mild winter but will Spring ever arrive?  We believe it will and very soon we’ll be spending lots of time on our decks or patios – I can’t wait!

Here are a few things you can do now to help you enjoy your outdoor haven to the fullest.

Take a walk around your property with a clipboard, notebook, or tablet so you can list everything that needs to be repaired or replaced. Pay attention to things such as:

  • Fences and gates
  • Furniture
  • Hot tub, pool, and barbecue covers
  • Planters and urns

Write down everything or snap a photo of it with your cell phone so when you are out and about you have the picture with you, a picture speaks a thousand words even if you don’t think you have the time or money to deal with it right now. You don’t have to do it all at once, but the earlier you start, the sooner you can start enjoying your outdoor space.

Get quotes!  Some jobs may be less expensive than you think. You’ll be able to make an informed decision, when prioritizing what you will do this year, next year, and further down the road.

Keep in mind that you don’t have to break the bank to make a big difference. A fresh coat of stain on your pressure-treated fence will go a long way towards increasing your yard’s visual appeal.

Can you invite guests over and be ready in 10 minutes, or do you need at least a day or two’s notice? Would it be worth it to hire a service to clean up the dog poop?  Or are you ready to get out there and get that over with?

You never get a second chance to make a first impression, so pay special attention to the front of your house. Nobody wants to see your garbage and recycling, so don’t keep it on the front porch! But if you have to, hide it inside attractive Rubbermaid storage sheds. These sheds come in various heights and widths and are also great for storing toys, pool chemicals, lawn chairs and cushions, even your lawn mower.

Do you let newspapers and flyers pile up by the front door until garbage day? Why not cancel your subscription and post a “No Flyer” sign?

Your yard is an extension of your home, and the same principles apply outside as inside. By that I mean that when you look at something day after day and year after year, you just don’t see it anymore. It is so important to assess your current outdoor space with fresh eyes and look at absolutely everything!

  • Does anyone still use that basketball net? If not, sell it!
  • Do all your trees, bushes, shrubs and flowers bring you pleasure? If not, dig them out.
  • Are your light fixtures attractive? Do they match? Do they need light bulbs?

A couple of finishing touches can really put your own personal stamp on your outdoor living space. Don’t be afraid to put metal artwork in your garden or on your fence. It will actually become more fashionable as it weathers!
